How the brain forms and stores memories: Understanding the science behind it

Human brain has more abilities, one of them is memory. Memory is the most fascinating abilities of human brain. It allows to store, retain and recall information, shaping who we are and how we interact through the world. But have you ever wondered how brain forms and stores memories? What is the actual science behind it?  Don't worry!  In this blog, we will dive into the science of the memory and come back with the full knowledge of what is the process and the brain structures which are responsible for this fantastic phenomenon. Let's dive….

What is memory and it's importance?

Memory is one of the ability of human brain which encode, store and retrieve information. It helps to learn new things, to adapt in every situation and  to make decisions based on the past experiences of our life. If we haven't memory then we couldn't recognize faces, don’t know language and can't navigate our daily life.

How brain forms memories?

Memory formation begins with sensory input. When we see, hear or experience something then our brain processes this information through a series of following steps:-

Encoding;

In the formation of memories, the process starts from encoding . In encoding, the sensory information is converted into a form where the brain can understand. In this process neurons, the brain's communication units are involved which transmits the signal through synapses.

Consolidation

Once the memory encoded, it stored in short term memory. Consolidation is happen during sleep, in this process the  short term memory transferred into long term memory so that's why the good sleep is required to make healthy memory.

Storage

Memories are stored in different parts of the brain usually in short term memory or long term memory. Short term memories are temporary but long term memory are permanent. You can convert short term memory into long term memory by repeating that memory in brain many times.

This is the process of storing memory in brain on science.
